The Control vs Automation Tradeoff is the choice you make every time you turn on an Advantage+ setting: you hand one decision over to Meta, who sees the ad, where it runs, how the creative gets assembled, or how the budget splits across your ad sets, in exchange for the system running that decision for you.
Here is what is actually happening when you flip one of those toggles. You are not just saving yourself a few clicks. You are telling Meta's system to make a call that you used to make by hand, and to keep making it, thousands of times a day, faster than you ever could. When you automate, you usually gain speed and often better results, because the system has genuinely got good at this, especially when you feed it strong conversion data. What you give up in return is fine control and visibility. You see less of what is going on underneath, and you steer less of it. That single trade, more machine and less hand, is the tension sitting under every Advantage+ feature you will ever touch.
This matters because the question people argue about is the wrong one. It is never "should I automate everything" or "should I keep control of everything". It is knowing which one wins in front of you right now. You automate when your tracking is clean and your creative is strong and you want to scale without babysitting every setting. You keep control when you are testing something specific and need to read the result cleanly, when your data is still thin and the system has nothing good to learn from, or when you have to guarantee an outcome, like honouring an exclusion list or reaching one precise audience and no one else.
My own view, after doing this for a while, is that automation is a tool and not a religion. The marketers who do well with it use it where it clearly helps and keep their hands on the wheel where it does not, instead of either surrendering the whole account to the machine or refusing to trust any of it. Both of those extremes are a decision made out of comfort, not out of judgement, and the account pays for it.
Automate the decisions the system can make better than you, and keep the ones you cannot afford to get wrong.
