Broad targeting means giving Meta almost no rules about who to see your ad, usually just a location and a wide age range, and letting its delivery system pick the people most likely to convert.
You have probably spent hours stacking interest after interest into an ad set, convinced that a longer list of hobbies and job titles was making your targeting smarter. Broad is the opposite move. Instead of handing Meta a tight list of who you think your buyer is, you hand it a location, an age range, and your objective, and then you get out of the way. The system reads who actually takes the action you care about and goes looking for more people like them, without you naming a single interest.
This matters because over the last few years two things happened at once: Meta's delivery got a lot better at finding buyers on its own, and tracking people by hand got a lot harder. When Meta can see who really purchases through your pixel and Conversions API, it will often find buyers you would never have thought to put on a list, so filtering the audience down with narrow interests can quietly cost you sales rather than protect them. Broad lets the part of the system that is genuinely good at this do its job, which is why it has become a common and often recommended setup on the Sales objective.
Broad is not the same as careless, and treating it that way is where most people get burned. It leans entirely on Meta having strong conversion data and enough budget to learn, so on a brand new pixel with almost no purchase history, or on a tiny daily budget, broad can just spend while it feels its way around. It also assumes your offer and your creative are doing the filtering that your targeting no longer does, because if nothing in the ad signals who it is for, a wide audience just means a wide miss.
This is my view, not a rule: broad works best once your tracking is solid and your creative is strong, not as a lazy default on day one.
Go broad when your data and your creative have earned it, not before.
