Detailed targeting is the box inside your ad set where you narrow who sees the ad by interests, behaviors and extra demographics, sitting on top of the basic age, location and gender you already set.
Say you are selling a beginner's yoga mat that only makes sense for people just starting out. You open the detailed targeting box and add an interest like "yoga", maybe a behavior like "engaged shoppers", and Meta then leans toward showing your ad to people who match that description instead of spraying it at everyone in your age and location range. You can stack a few of these together to sketch out a more specific person, so the mat lands in front of someone who actually does yoga rather than someone who has never rolled out a mat in their life.
This matters because it is how you point Meta at a particular kind of buyer when you genuinely know who that buyer is. When your product only works for a narrow group, telling Meta up front who to lean toward saves you from paying to reach people who were never going to care, and it gives the system a warmer starting point while it figures out who converts.
Be careful, because two traps live in this box. The first is stacking so many interests that you squeeze the audience down until Meta cannot find enough people to deliver well, which starves the ad set and chokes its learning before it ever gets going. The second is that Meta increasingly expands past your detailed targeting on its own when it thinks it can find cheaper results somewhere else, so the interests you pick are more of a hint than a hard fence these days. Treat detailed targeting as a nudge in a direction, not a cage, and resist the urge to keep piling on interests thinking each new one makes the aim sharper.
Detailed targeting tells Meta which way to lean, it does not lock the door behind it.
