App Store Optimization, or ASO, is tuning your store listing, the title, subtitle, keywords, icon, screenshots, ratings, and reviews, so more people find and install your app.
You have a listing sitting in the App Store or on Google Play, and it is doing two jobs at once. It has to help people who are searching the store stumble onto you organically, and it has to convince the people your ads send to that same page to actually tap install. The words you choose decide whether search surfaces you at all. The icon and the first two screenshots decide, in about a second, whether a stranger trusts you enough to download. Your star rating and reviews sit right there as social proof, nudging the yes or the no.
The nice part is that ASO and your paid ads feed each other, because both funnels dump people onto the exact same listing, so a sharper listing lifts organic discovery and your paid install rate at the same time.
Two honest limits temper this. You do not fully control your ratings and reviews, those come from users and can turn on you after a bad update, and Apple's and Google's stores rank and index listings by different rules, so a listing tuned for one is not automatically tuned for the other.
Your listing is the door every install walks through, so it is worth more than most people give it.
