The App Install Funnel

In one lineFrom an impression to a paying, returning user.

The app install funnel is the full journey from someone seeing your ad to becoming a paying, returning user, and every step along the way leaks people.

You run a campaign to get your app onto phones, and the path looks simple from the outside: someone sees an impression, taps the ad, lands on your app store page, installs, opens the app, signs up or gets onboarded, does something meaningful inside, and eventually pays. In reality each of those arrows is a leak. A slice of people who tap never reach the store, a slice who reach the store never install, a big slice who install never even open, and on it goes down to the handful who actually pay and stick around.

Once you see it as a funnel instead of a single install number, you start asking where the drop is worst. Maybe your click to install is fine but your install to first open falls off a cliff. Maybe people open but never finish onboarding. You cannot fix a leak you have not located, so you measure every stage and treat the weakest one as your next job.

The trap to avoid is that the install is the middle of the funnel, not the finish line. A cheap install that never opens the app or never pays you a single rupee is worthless, no matter how good the cost per install looks in the dashboard. The money question is always what happens after the install, not the install itself.

Count people all the way to the money, not to the download.
