Deferred Deep Linking

Deferred deep linking is the technique that routes a user who taps your ad to the exact right screen or content inside your app right after they install it, surviving the detour through the app store.

You run an ad for one specific product, offer or piece of content. A regular deep link only works if the app is already installed. But a new user does not have your app yet, so tapping the ad sends them to the store first, and by the time they open the app for the first time the context is gone. Deferred deep linking carries that original intent across the install, so after they download and launch, they land on the exact thing your ad promised instead of a generic first screen.

This is what makes your acquisition ads feel coherent. Someone taps an ad for a specific course, installs, opens, and is looking at that course, not a blank home feed they now have to navigate. That continuity is often the difference between a first session that activates and one that bounces.

Know that it is fragile. Deferred deep linking is setup-heavy, depends on your MMP and your app being wired together correctly, and breaks quietly. When it breaks, a brand-new user gets dumped onto a generic home screen instead of the thing they clicked for, and you usually will not see it in a dashboard until activation quietly sags. So test it like a paid feature, on real devices, on both iOS and Android, before and after every app release.

Test your deferred deep links on every release, because the failure mode is silent and it lands on brand-new users.
