App Install Advertising

In one lineWhy advertising an app is a different game.

App install advertising is paid promotion that sends people to an app store to download your app, where the "conversion" is the install plus what they do inside the app afterward.

You come at this from web advertising, where you can drop a pixel on your own site, watch a click turn into a purchase, and tie almost every step back to a person. App advertising breaks that habit. The app store sits right in the middle of your funnel, so someone taps your ad, gets handed off to Apple or Google, and finishes the download on a page you did not build and cannot fully see. Your real goal is not the install anyway. It is the person who installs, opens, signs up, and sticks around, and all of that happens inside the app after the click.

You also give up a lot of the manual dials you are used to. These campaigns lean hard on automation, where you feed the system a budget, a goal, and creative, and it decides who sees what. On top of that, measurement runs through a privacy wall. Apple and Google restrict user-level tracking, so instead of a clean click-to-install trail you get counts that are grouped together, held back for a day or more, and stripped of the detail you would normally lean on.

The catch is control. You do not own the store listing your click lands on, and you judge the whole thing through aggregated, delayed, privacy-limited data rather than a tidy per-person report, so app advertising asks for a genuinely different mindset than web.

Stop chasing the click, and start reading the blurry picture the store lets you keep.
