A conversion event is a specific action you tell TikTok to treat as a result, like a purchase, a lead, or an add to cart.
You define which action counts, and TikTok tracks each time it happens through your Pixel or Events API. That event becomes the thing you optimize for, so the platform goes looking for more of the people who take it. Pick the wrong event and TikTok chases the wrong behavior all day.
Say your real goal is sales but you set the conversion event to page view. TikTok will happily find you cheap page views and no buyers. Set it to purchase instead, and it hunts for actual customers. Open your events setup and confirm the one action that matters to your business is the one marked as your optimization event.
The catch is that TikTok needs enough of these events to learn. If your chosen conversion is rare, like a high-value purchase that happens only a few times a week, the system starves for data, so many advertisers optimize for an earlier, more frequent event instead.
Tell it what a win looks like, and be sure it is the win you actually want.
