Your bid strategy is the rule you hand Meta for how it competes in the auction every time it has a chance to show your ad, and the whole thing really comes down to one question: how much control do you want over what a result costs you.
There are three broad families to choose from, and once you see them this way the menu stops feeling confusing. The first family just tells Meta to go get you the most results your budget can buy, with no promise at all about what each one costs, and that is what you are picking when you choose Highest volume, or Highest value if you are optimizing for purchase value. The second family tells Meta to chase a number you name, so you either hand it a cost you want it to average toward with a Cost per result goal, or a return you want it to hold with a ROAS goal, and it tries to keep to that average across the whole ad set rather than on any single result. The third family is Bid cap, where you set a manual hard ceiling on what Meta is allowed to bid in every single auction, and that is the expert tool you reach for last, not first.
This matters because it is the exact spot where you decide whether you care more about volume or about protecting your margin, and the wrong call costs you either way. Lean too loose and you leave cheap results sitting on the table that a tighter setup would have caught; lean the other way without knowing your numbers and you watch your cost per result drift right past what your margins can actually absorb.
Be clear about one thing before you touch the cost-control options: they are not a button that makes your results cheaper on command. If you name a target that is far below what your results actually cost, Meta does not magically find you a bargain; it simply cannot find enough auctions it can win at that price, so it slows down or barely spends at all, and you end up with almost no results instead of cheap ones. Feed it a target that is honest about what you already know a result costs you, and then tighten from there.
Pick the strategy that matches what you are actually protecting, and give it a target it can believe.
