Recommendations

In one lineGoogle's suggestions, and the auto-apply trap.

Recommendations are the specific suggestions Google surfaces in your account, such as add keywords, raise a budget, switch bidding, or turn on broad match, and each one carries an estimated impact on your optimization score.

You are on the Recommendations tab and every card is offering you something. Add these fifteen keywords. Raise this budget by a set amount. Move this campaign to a different bidding strategy. Each one shows a little uplift number and an Apply button, and there is often a toggle offering to just handle these for you automatically from now on.

That auto-apply toggle is the part to slow down on. Flipping it on hands Google standing permission to change your account on its own, without asking you first each time. It can raise budgets, add match types, and swap bidding strategies while you are asleep, and it can quietly undo a deliberate choice you made last month for a good reason you still remember.

The individual cards are more useful than the auto-apply switch. A recommendation to add a negative keyword or fix a disapproved ad is often worth doing. A recommendation to broaden your match types or lift your budget deserves a hard look, because those change what you spend and where. The difference is that you are reading each one and deciding, rather than letting a rule decide for you in the dark.

Keep auto-apply off unless you have read exactly what it will do. The settings screen lists which recommendation types it will act on, and most of them are the ones you most want a human hand on. Leave the toggle off, work the cards one at a time, and apply the ones that fit your plan on purpose.

Apply recommendations because you agree with them, not because Google offered to do it for you.
