Performance Max

In one lineOne automated campaign across all of Google's inventory.

Performance Max is one automated campaign that runs across every Google surface at once, with Google making most of the targeting and bidding decisions for you.

You want results and you do not want to build and babysit five separate campaigns to get them. Performance Max is Google's answer to that wish. You hand it a pile of assets, headlines, images, videos, logos, grouped into what Google calls asset groups, you add some audience signals about who your customers are, and it goes off and serves ads across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps, and Discover from that single campaign. You set a goal, usually sales or leads, and the machine decides where and to whom and for how much.

When it works, it works because Google's automation is genuinely good at finding buyers across all that inventory faster than you could by hand. Newer versions give you more to hold onto than the early days did, including channel level reporting so you can finally see where your money went, plus campaign level negative keywords and brand exclusions to keep it in its lane.

Be honest that it is still largely a black box. You get less visibility and less control than a normal Search campaign, and left unguarded it will happily cannibalize the brand searches you would have won for pennies anyway, then take credit for them. Without clean conversion tracking it optimizes toward garbage, and without guardrails it eats budget. Treat it as a powerful tool that needs a leash, not a set-and-forget button.

Give the machine good data and firm fences, or it spends your money teaching itself.
