Mobile ad fraud is any scheme that manufactures fake clicks, installs, or events to claim attribution and drain a budget for conversions that were never real.

The common forms attack different points in the funnel. Click injection triggers a click at the moment a real install begins, stealing credit from whoever actually drove it. Click spamming fires floods of clicks so that any organic install lands inside the attribution window and gets billed. SDK spoofing fabricates install and event signals with no real device behind them. Install farms and emulators produce the installs by hand or at scale. All of them exploit the same thing: attribution rewards the last click before a conversion, and postbacks trust what they are told.

Look at a source in your MMP with a suspiciously short time from click to install, most under ten seconds. Real users take minutes; a sub-ten-second median is the signature of click injection racing the install broadcast. You block that publisher, and your install count barely drops while your day-two retention and post-install events climb, because those installs were never people.

SKAN and self-attributing networks changed where fraud hides, they did not remove it. Coarse, aggregated postbacks give you fewer device-level signals to catch a spoofer with, so fraud now shows up as thin cohorts and impossible conversion timing rather than obvious duplicate device IDs. If a source converts brilliantly but every downstream event flatlines, you are paying for installs, not users.

Fake installs are cheap to make and expensive to trust.
