Engagement Rate

In one lineEngaged sessions divided by total sessions.
Engagement Rate illustration

Engagement rate is the share of your sessions that were engaged, calculated as engaged sessions divided by total sessions.

You read it as a percentage. It tells you what portion of visits cleared the engaged-session bar of ten-plus seconds, a key event, or two-plus views. It is the positive framing of the same measurement bounce rate reports in the negative, which is why the two always add up to one hundred percent.

If you had 1,000 sessions and 620 of them were engaged, your engagement rate is 62 percent. That means 38 percent were not engaged, which is your bounce rate for the same period, no separate calculation needed.

Engagement rate is session-based, not user-based, so do not read it as "62 percent of people liked the page." One person with three sessions contributes three data points, and the same visitor can be engaged on one visit and not the next. It measures visits, not individuals. Treat it as a session-quality signal, not a headcount of interested humans.

The good half of the bounce coin.
