A GA4 audience is a group of users defined by rules you set, used in reporting and, once linked, in Google Ads.
You build one by combining conditions on events, dimensions, and metrics: users who fired a specific event, hit a page, came from a source, or match a demographic. GA4 evaluates the rules and keeps the membership current as users qualify or drop out. The same audience can then break down your reports or feed retargeting.
You define an audience as users who triggered purchase in the last 30 days but not refund. That group shows up as a comparison in your reports, and if the property is linked to Google Ads, it also becomes a list you can target or exclude.
Membership is not retroactive past the lookback window. An audience only starts collecting users from the moment you create it, plus whatever the rules can backfill from existing data, capped at 30 days for most conditions. Build the audiences you will want before you need them, not the week of the campaign.
Rules in, users out. Set them early.
